The Gringarican Handbook - stories about moving to Vieques, PR, life in the slow lane and becoming a Gringarican

Winter Wonderland, Annie Lennox, 2007

Vermont had been good to us, and for us.  But after 20+ years, we were comfortable moving on.  We had made some wonderful friends and we had taken advantage of all the things Vermont offered.  Fred fulfilled his dream of being able to ski every day (and still make enough money to live on) and I was lucky enough to have time to pursue artistic endeavors while working at odd jobs.    We both had hiked, mountain biked, cross country and alpine skied.  Fred had water skied in the lakes.  We were PSIA certified instructors in Nordic and Alpine skiing.  We traveled to Canada for cross country skiing and out west for downhill.
Won't you miss your friends?  YES!  But now they will have the opportunity to visit us during the frigid winter.  With email and SKYPE, we're able to easily keep in touch.
Won't you miss skiing?  NO!  Fred's sister had purchased a condo in Colorado and was spending winters there.  Who wouldn't rather ski in Colorado than Vermont?
Will you still work?  Absolutely!!  We can't afford not to.  Although we had reduced our debt to practically nothing, those living expenses do not go away.  Once we're old enough to "retire" we'll still need additional income.
We had originally thought we would move to Barbados.  We had spent many years vacationing there and absolutely loved the island.  We knew the lay of the land and had made good friends there.  However, it would not be the island for us.  Only wealthy ex pats could afford the real estate prices and the taxes and escrows that went along with being an "outsider".  Non Bajans are not allowed to work on the island of Barbados unless it is a special case.
Vieques, as a US territory, seemed like a dream come true.
